DRUGS AND STATES' RIGHTS

Even though I think the proliferation of Category II type drugs from Mexico, Colombia, etc., has been truly devastating (even though ignored as a trade-off to a strong economy), I think this article raises an interesting States' rights issue with respect to marijuana. As this is sometimes considered a gateway drug, I am not totally sure where I stand on the issue even though the SC has made the law fairly clear. I tend to agree with the SC, but find the use of marijuana in critical medical situations very compelling -- especially when suffering, or life and death is part of the picture.

I wonder how States deal with this conflict when they decide to pass such laws?

I know cocaine is used at hospitals for certain eye operations. Why is this different from those with cancer and marijuana? Is it just the source of distribution? Or the fact that a doctor is administering the drug?

Or is it more about the cost of enforcing these marijuana laws? Sounds like enforcing our laws is very costly these days!
