UC REGENTS, CALIFORNIA STATS ANTI AFRICAN AMERICAN

Here are some interesting numbers and statistics for California and its “UCs.” The UC stats are at the end of this post.

I find these stats to be not only interesting, but also reflect, in part, the impact that illegal immigration has had on the disproportionately poor African American communities of California and their local high schools.

This is further exacerbated by other pro immigrant policies of the UCs, which essentially ignore the ongoing plight of California’s poor "citizens" from all walks of life. Given that African Americans make up a "disproportionate" share of these citizens, I think the UC's policies are particularly hurtful to African Americans.


ESTIMATED CALIFORNIA POPULATION AS OF 2006

Whites = 16.4 million; growing at 50 thousand per year; Whites are around 44 percent of CA’s total population [Can't we get a better term than "white"? Yuck! I feel so left out!]

African Americans = 2.2 million; declining at 7 thousand per year; African Americans are around 6 percent of the total

American Indian = 0.23 million; growing at 7 thousand per year

Asian = 4.6 million; growing at 125 thousand per year (or 3 percent); Asians are around 12 percent of total

Hispanic = 13.5 million; growing at 405 thousand per year (or 3 percent); Hispanics are around 35 percent of the total. It is estimated that up to 8 million of the Hispanics in CA are illegal aliens. This would make sense given only 8 percent of the Hispanics are registered voters (as of 2000), as compared to 50 percent, give or take, for others / citizens.


REGISTERED VOTERS AS OF 2000

Whites = 9 million; over 55 percent of CA’s Whites; equals 69 percent of total registered voters

African Americans = 1 million; over 45 percent of CA’s African Americans; equals 8 percent of total registered voters

Asian / Others = 1 million; over 22 percent of Asians / Others; equals 8 percent of total registered voters. Numbers “suggestive” of the large immigrant population

Hispanic = 1.9 million; over 14 percent of Hispanics; equals 16 percent of total registered voters. If the 8 million illegals were excluded, then the numbers would not seem so "off"


UC UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATION TOTALS FOR FALL 2006

As detailed on the UC site, the numbers are (1) for California residents and (2) reduced for “multiple” applications by the same person (or something like that?).

The site would be more helpful if it totaled the numbers allowing for multiple applications, but it does not do this. Nonetheless, the per institution numbers are listed; and therefore, are better indicators of the difficulty of getting into one institution versus another, etc.

Whites = 26,075 “individuals”

African Americans = 3,240 “individuals”

Asians = 20,521 “individuals” (30 percent; wow!!!)

Hispanic = 13,509 “individuals”

Illegal aliens are generally considered “residents” for purposes of admissions, assuming they have been in California for the requisite period of time. It is my understanding that this policy is currently in direct violation of existing federal law; but will be legal under the proposed immigration legislation that the Senate just passed. The spots given to illegals take away spots available for California citizens.


UC UNDERGRADUATE ADMITS FOR FALL 2006

Whites = 19,685; 75 percent of White individual applicants get accepted "somewhere" (give or take)

African Americans = 1,880; 59 percent of African American applicants get accepted to one of the UCs. This number is low. Is there an anti African American bias within the UCs? Or is it just a pro immigrant bias?

Asians = 19,896; 97 percent of Asian applicants. Wow!!!

Hispanic = 9,750; 72.5 percent of Hispanic applicants. Wow!!!

These numbers are interesting and suggest that the Asian applicants are doing something right or something the UCs value. Asians, 12 percent of California's population, get around 35 percent of the UC "admits." Wow!!! See bottom for update.


UC UNDERGRADUATE INTENT TO REGISTER FOR FALL 2006

Whites = 11,981; 61 percent of White admits accept

African Americans = 1,117; 59 percent of admits

Asians = 15,527; 78 percent of admits. In the end, 12 percent of the population gets close to half (actually 42%) of the actual UC seats. This is surprising to me, but the numbers don’t lie

Hispanic = 6,041; 62 percent of admits


UPDATE:

Approximately 30 percent of the applications are from Asians, and around 97 percent get accepted to one of the UCs (excluding duplication). Wow!!!

It appears that this is, in part, because of the “top 4 percent” (or “ELC”) program which was discussed in a prior post. [Basically, the top 4 percent of public high school students are guaranteed a place at one of the UCs.]

In 2000, Asian applicants under “non-ELC,” or the normal application track numbered 16.0 thousand (with 13.5 thousand admits, or 84 percent). The numbers for Whites was 18.9 thousand applications (with 16.5 admits, or 87 percent). These numbers suggest that under the non-ELC track for admissions, Whites and Asians are admitted at basically the same rate. This makes sense based on published SAT, CHSEE, and GPA numbers. These numbers make sense, but do indicate that Whites are not submitting applications to the UCs at the same rate as Asians. Not sure why this is . . .

However, under the “top 4 percent” program, the numbers for Asian admits numbered 3,110 (around 30 percent?), while the number of White admits was 3,360 (around 12 percent?).

I guess the question is why is this? What are the Asain communities doing right that we should learn from? Are their numbers really that much better? Is it okay to ask such questions? This is a question of culture.
